Charlie is a freshman. And while he’s not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But Charlie can’t stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.
The title itself was deceiving for the content of this book. But, maybe what the author wanted it to be. How do I get to know about this book? I was surfing the internet in Tumblr particularly. I am a fan of Emma Watson. I found out that she will be acting again after Harry Potter. And, it is the movie version of this book. That’s how I become interested. To know that Logan Lerman of Lightning Thief will be the lead actor and they will have romance here made me more curious about this book. (OMGGG!!!) Now, I am getting excited. I wanted to read the book first before watching the movie that’s why now I’m here making a book review. For me, it’s overrated. I mean… It was really recommended and all. I really expect this high but then it was just so so.
I finished the book for 3 weeks unlike other readers just for a day. I admit I am not a book-worm. I only read when someone recommends. Surely, I’ll finish it faster if I’m really into it. This is an epistolary novel. I’m used to this style name it… Diary of Anne Frank, Princess Diaries… Though here, a boy is the lead character. I got to know him. I got to know Charlie even though He’s always saying that he doesn’t want to reveal himself. I became his Confidant for 3 weeks, I guess. Maybe, this is one thing that I like about this novel because the reader is not just a reader but also like a secret character (the anonymous friend). I enjoyed it.
Being a wallflower, my friend Charlie struggled a lot socially when he enters high school. He’s experiencing some kind of depression for his Best Friend died due to suicide. Also, his favorite Aunt died. It was just a tragic start. He also met Bill. Bill is his English Teacher. I think he is my favorite character. haha. Maybe because I’m an English Teacher too? hahaha.. funny! Nah.. not really. He’s one of the person who helped Charlie a lot especially on improving his writing style. I saw the improvement throughout the book. Bill also gave him books to read, such as: To Kill a Mockingbird, On The Road and Naked Lunch. I’ve heard about how to kill a mocking bird but I never read it. When I saw the words, Naked Lunch, it reminds me of a classic painting not a book.
As quotes go, I prefer Bill saying
‘we accept the love we think we deserve’.
This my favorite quote in this book because i can relate to it. 🙂 Charlie met Sam and Patrick. These characters really gave an impact to his life. After meeting them, Charlie have written longer to me. He find life more interesting.
Sam tapped her hand on the steering wheel. Patrick held his hand outside the car and made air waves. And I just sat between them. After the song finished, I said something. “I feel infinite.” And Sam and Patrick looked at me like I said the greatest thing they ever heard. Because the song was that great and because we all really paid attention to it. Five minutes of a lifetime were truly spend, and we felt young in a good way.”
Maybe, if I can relate on all the soundtracks he loved, I’ll love this book more but not. I really felt their great friendship with each other through all Charlie’s letters. Charlie is in love with Sam even though she’s older than him. I’m a SAM-CHARLIE shipper so I really want them to end up with each other. I guess they will if the book has a part 2. hahaha! About Patrick who was surprisingly a gay. My jaw-dropped on the revelation of his relationship with Brad. Oh yeah. Homosexuality issue was revealed in this part. Even Charlie and Patrick has a kissing scene too. Anyway, it’s just a friendly kiss. JUST? To comfort his best friend.I’m such a spoiler. :p I only read the book once. I don’t know when I will read it again? Honestly, at some parts I’m really still confuse. Especially, the ending part where in Charlie’s disease was revealed. It is cause of his aunt’s molestation to him. That really, I got confuse. Still, I’m wondering what really is the PERKS of being a wallflower? Can someone tell me?
So, if you’re one of the people who have read the book already. Feel free to leave a comment.
