Review:

CHARLOTTE  is a unique, surreal, drama and science fiction anime. It was ranked # 1 2015 Anime on Japan based from my blogger friend Shiroyuni.  (Please do read the “Charlotte: The Controversy” article too.) Why Charlotte is the title?  Charlotte is an asteroid crossing on earth every 75 years (not sure).  Inhaling the dust from the asteroid will give people super natural ability (known as ability wielders).

Soundtracks

The genre of the songs is something like electronica (owl city like sound) which is cool and appropriate for its animation.

Here the list of songs:

Story

The story focuses on  students including Yū Otosaka, a boy with the power to control another person, albeit only for 5 seconds and only when directly looking at the target, Nao Tomori, who uses her power to become invisible to one person she chooses in order to convince others to listen to her, Jōjirō Takajō, with the power to move extremely quickly making it look like teleportation, and Yusa Nishimori who is usually possessed by her deceased pyrokinetic sister, Misa, due to her ability as a medium.

Together they will catch the ability wielders abusing their powers and convince them to be protected.

Characters:

Yū Otosaka (乙坂 有宇, Otosaka Yū)

is the male protagonist of the story, and a first-year transfer student at Hoshinoumi Academy. He has the ability to temporarily possess a person for about 5 seconds. However, it is later revealed that his actual ability is stealing the abilities of an ability-user he possesses. Towards the end of the series, he becomes widely known (and feared) as the One-Eyed Grim Reaper. He is Ayumi Otosaka’s older brother and Shunsuke Otosaka’s younger brother.

Nao Tomori (友利 奈緒, Tomori Nao)

is one of the main characters of Charlotte. She is a first year and the Student Council president of Hoshinoumi Academy. Nao often uses her camcorder to record the power of ability users for proof, and is a huge fan of ZHIEND, her brother’s favorite band.

Jōjirō Takajō (高城 丈士朗 Takajō Jōjirō)

is a member of the Hoshinoumi Academy student council. He is also an ability wielder. He is able to move at extremely high speeds. This movement is so rapid, things around him slow down and makes him look like he is teleporting; however, it is not to be confused with actual teleportation.

Yusa Nishimori (西森柚咲, Nishimori Yusa)

is a main character and also a member of the student council. She is the vocalist of the band How-Low-Hello and a teen idol of sorts. She is also known as Yusarin. Her real surname is “Kurobane” (黒羽 柚咲, Kurobane Yusa) but her agency changed it since they thought that the name was not appropriate for an idol. This means she was born as Yusa Kurobane.

Ayumi Otosaka (乙坂 歩未, Otosaka Ayumi)

is a main character in Charlotte and Yū Otosaka‘s little sister. She is in middle school and idolizes Yusa Nishimori from the band How-Low-Hello.Throughout the series, Ayumi displayed a very cheerful personality. She gets along easily with other people, as seen when she first met Nao Tomori and Yū in her new apartment. She cares a lot for her brother, making sure to wake him up early to prepare breakfast for him every day.

Animation:

P.A. Works and Aniplex are responsible for the animation.  And, it was great! The animation of this anime is attractive for me. It’s modern and digital integrated.  The different emotions of Yu was well shown in his facial expressions.

Comments and Suggestions:

On my shortest summer break, Charlotte anime series made me transcend to the galaxy of supernatural and life beyond experience. Thanks to Jana’s younger brother because he has the complete 13 episodes copy. It made me watch it continuously. (No Buffer!)

I thought it will be just another school life drama but I was wrong. It was really UNPREDICTABLE. It had adrenaline rush watching the middle part of the series up to the end. Though, I fast forward some scenes in Yuu’s depression drama and around the world mission.

Watching this is like playing a mind game but you suddenly lose because you get lost on finding out what’s next. I even get confused in some point of the story. (Yu’s dream after collapsing in ZHEIND’s Concert) I like the student council club relationship (reminds me of Hyouka) developed thoroughly as episodes goes by. This support group (Yusarin, Takajo and Nao) helped Otosaka Yu to get motivated and recovered faster in the hospital.

Yusarin’s pop idol sensation, Zheind’s vocalist big apetite, Takajo’s ability to order fastly and Ayumi’s repetitive omelette rice give light to the story. (Just a few humor to chew on in this series). Regarding the different abilities, I’ve seen Yu’s the most powerful and threatening. It’s the ability to loot others power.

He becomes the key solution in the end to save the world.  I was terrified upon discovering it because it reminds me about my “personal tragic past experience”.  I already saw it on my nightmares. Let say, I had some same experience to Yu’s.  On the other hand, knowing that this power is only temporary (puberty disease) puts my hopes high.

At First, I hate Yu and don’t like him to end up with Nao. Tomori Nao is my most liked character because she just rocks :p. haha!  I’ve come to like Yu when he confessed to Nao. *oops spoiler* I love how Nao responded to him in the most matured and logical way. They waited to prioritize saving the world.  Wow! It’s not an overly dramatic romance. Good Job! Maeda san!

The anime taught me the value of life, reality of miracles and responsibility for power. It was my first Maeda work experience. It was nice! I recommend it to people who has higher wisdom and astronomy nerd (? Haha). So, what’s your thought about this anime? Let me know by leaving comments below.

PS: My country Philippines was also mentioned in this anime last episode.

Rating : 7.5 out of 10

  1. Glad you enjoyed it Lovely! But oh no why did you fast forward those scenes haha 😦 They were some of my favourite parts of the series xD

Oh and just to clarify for your readers – the statistic about Charlotte being the Number 1 series in Japan was based on a poll taken from about 1000 people, so it may or may not accurately reflect the general sentiment in Japan xD (I personally believe it still does, though! :p)

  2. The latter episodes of Charlotte were wake up calls at every turn, like holy cow! The animation was pretty and I liked Yu and his sister. Nao was pretty cool, too, but we saw less and less of her with every passing frame. Glad this anime meant so much to you, as I think it was pretty alright, too ^.%

  3. I really enjoyed Charlotte. The first couple of episodes are pretty ordinary but then it takes the story in a whole other direction (and yet it feels like that’s where it was headed all along) and the characters develop so well. Loved watching this even as I had my heart broken toward the end of the series.

    1. Hi Karandi! happy New Year to you! 😀 I overlooked your comment about Charlotte Anime. >////< I agree that the first episodes looks ordinary then poof it exploded in the mid when Yu collapsed in concert. the plot was quite surprising. It excites me. Given the chance I would re-watch it. 🙂

  4. I loved the part where Yu literally broke down and just went nuts for a whole episode and on the brink of losing himself entirely. It was so emotional and really unexpected.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending due to how bittersweet it was and I felt Maeda simply put in the amnesia at the end to make the ending not 100% happy, but overall I really loved the show a lot.

It’s by far Maeda’s best work and one of my favourite shows of 2015. Great post!
