Playing it cool : Movie Review

PLAYING IT COOL is the story of ME (Chris Evans), a young man disillusioned by love, who meets a breathtaking young woman, HER (Michelle Monaghan), at a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist. Only one problem: she’s engaged. Yet, he engages into a platonic relationship to be able to keep seeing her. Like a young ‘Walter Mitty’ using the power of imagination and wild vignettes, ME will stop at nothing to conquer HER heart. (source: wikipedia)

“PLAYING IT COOL” is a Romance, Comedy and a Chris Evans Movie. It’s a screen writer assigned to made a romantic comedy script but doesn’t believe in this kind of love. Writing something that you don’t believe in is hard.  What made him write is when love came to him unexpectedly.

It focuses on how “Me” find love and will believe on it for him to write a romantic comedy script. He will chase love with the conflict of being the third party.

Chris Evans as “Me”

  • plays the narrator, a lovelorn, one-night stand type whose mom left him years ago with a note on the Cap’n Crunch and whose heart isn’t just on his sleeve, it’s taken form and follows him around, chain-smoking.

Michelle Monaghan as “Her”

  • Plays the apple of the eye of him. She’s an advocate of charities. She got engaged with her long time boyfriend. She’s being followed by him all the time just because he’s already in love.

I like where Chris Evans portray different kind of personas. I also notice the insert of clips for imagination that contribution to the comedy kick of this movie.

  • Office
  • Wedding Event
  • Charity Dinner
  • Diner
  • Her’s apartment

I’ve known Chris Evans as Captain America. I never saw him in a romantic film like this.  I checked out the trailer first before actually watching it. I’m curious if it will worth my time.  It was fun so I decided to watch it.

Playing it cool as the title of this film seemed to be an action movie as my first impression but I understand everything in the later part of watching.  The idea of writing a Romantic Comedy Script for a movie from a writer who is never been in love in his whole life. He’s just dating random women but just for the sake of it. He also doesn’t believe in True Love. Because it never happened to him yet until he met this woman.

He would always refer love into just infatuation only.  Does being in love really means being crazy about the person?  As for me, being crazy about the person is just like infatuation. It’s like being a fan of One Direction or K-Pop idols. That’s a clear infatuation because first of all it’s one sided love. When I watch Korean dramas, the climax would always be this guy  chasing this girl because she’s going to a far away place. There’s this chase.  In reality, it seldom happen to a normal girl boy relationship. Okay, Dramas are just dramatic. My principle now about LOVE is not being crazy about it. Having a principled romance and guide from God are the best formula to make LOVE happen for 2 persons.  I would always ask my mom, “Why people would attempt to take suicide just because their gf or bf break up with her”  She would say, “Because she’s in love.” Period. I don’t believe that. If it is LOVE, the result will ALWAYS be POSITIVE.  Love will never fail.  The bible proves it. If bad things happen, most likely it’s not TRUE LOVE.

So much for that, hahaha! If I would be assigned to write a romantic comedy.,it will be challenging. If I need to be objective, then it would be easier because I just need a research and use other people experiences. The chemistry of the actors is just okay. It’s good. I like the idea that the main character is a writer beating a deadline. I can relate to it. What else? Overall, I enjoyed watching the movie because of some humor though it showed the wild side of romance as well. What will you expect to an American  movie… ?

If you like Chris Evans, then watch this film to see his side other than being Captain America. How about you what’s your idea about LOVE? Share your thoughts with my review by leaving comments below.
