Characters:

Emma Stone as Mia

She’s an aspiring actress who works as a barista in a coffee shop. She keeps on going to audition so she can fulfill her dream becoming an actress. She has almond eyes, wavy hair, witty and lovable.

Ryan Gosling as Sebastian

He’s a dedicated jazz musician who has frustrations in life. He has always been a traditionalist musician when it comes to the style of music. To pursue music , he didn’t choose a work. He played piano in restaurants, house parties and even became a pop jazz idol with the band.

Cinematography:

There are scenes that is animated or has visual graphics in the film. I think the purpose is to exaggerate a certain mood of a scene. I understand  because the genre is musical. It can be a little to fancy though especially the part when Mia imagined what if she ended with Sebastian. The story was also shown with season sequence : Winter, Spring , Summer and Fall.

Settings:

  • Coffee Shop (Mia work)
  • Jazz Pub
  • Movie and Museum
  • Park
  • Los Angeles, California

This is really one La La lovely film I watched to start the year.  I am one of the people who can appreciate this kind of genre. La la land actually reminds me of “Music and Lyrics” starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore .(just without the musical scene but of course with the passion about music).  What make it stand out among the rest is  musical soundtracks picks of the movie,  the main actors chemistry and the bittersweet ending.

The girl is a café barista who keeps on going on audition to be an actress. She keeps chasing her dream. And there’s this dedicated Jazz pianist who wants to keep Jazz music alive in the modern world. They are connected with Music and Arts. That how  they get along eventually though their first meeting is not really a good one. I find it funny. :))

I love how this movie becomes even more charming as the story goes. I watched several musical film before like High School Musical, Hair Spray and Glee (TV Series) but what difference it has with the others is it  brings the nostalgic music of Pop/Jazz into the modern times. It has a touch of oldies but goodies mood with the scenery, music and costumes yet you are aware that the setting is happening in the 21st century. You won’t feel like “ugh… this is an old movie”…No, it’s not. They use iphone here.

I believe Emma Stone do really fits the role of Mia.  Women who has real ambition, humor and wit are attractive. Any guy would love to date her.  I just like the fact that she’s persistent on her dreams just like me. Ryan Gosling fits the role as well. He’s laid back and surprisingly romantic.  You would really watch out what will happen next to the two of them.

As I have said earlier, I really love the soundtracks. My most favorite is “City of Stars“.  I recommend this film most likely to musical fans, romance suckers and just a go to film to watch in a weekend. I understand now why it’s award winning. Try it for yourself! 😀
