Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan’s most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri’s window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either.
However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri’s house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor’s tutelage.

Yuri! on Ice (2016) is a sports anime about figure skating. Yuri Katsuki who’s planning to quit figure skating after losing was given hope by Viktor as he came along to be his coach. It also has this comic side that will surely make you laugh as you go on with the episodes.
I appreciate the music ost in this anime. It sounds classic even just the instrumental music piece for the figure skating program. I love it! ❤
A figure skater who is faint-hearted and gains weight easily. He’s the “figure skater with the world’s biggest glass heart.” His favorite dish is a 900kcal breaded pork cutlet bowl. His greatest skating assets are his peculiar sense of rhythm and unique step. However, he is weak to pressure and messes up at crucial moments. He’s at a crucial point in his career, and he bets everything on one last skating season.
Victor is a Russian figure skater whom is recognized as a “living legend.” The best of the best, he is a five-peat champion of the World Championship. Having a charismatic personality, his motto is to surprise people, and he is a skating pioneer who keeps rewriting the history every season. In a move that shocks the skating world, Victor decides to drop out of competitive skating to become Yuri’s coach.
A next-generation Russian figure skater who has won three consecutive junior world championships. Because of his looks, he is called the “Russian Fairy,” but as soon as he steps off the ice he becomes vulgar and acts more like a delinquent. He is an ambitious person who believes without a doubt he will become the best in the world.
The animation is not that modern as they say. I actually thought of Yuri Katsuki looks like Rukawa of Slam Dunk. I thought the animation is also as old with the said anime. I’ve read that doing sports anime is tedious or more maticulous because you need to show the detailed movements of the characters. i must say that out well executed in Yuri on Ice. The need of special effects of anything is not required for me to like it. Job well done still.
Comment and Suggestion:
YURI! On Ice was really a fad in the anime world last FALL 2016. I keep seeing YOI fan arts, anime screen caps and GIF images in my Twitter Stream that made me wonder what’s about this anime. I was a made aware that it is a sports anime (figure skating). I think it’s the first time to have a Sports Anime about Figure Skating. Is it? I didn’t get to watch it right away because of work. I am also not sure if I will like it so I didn’t bother before. This Christmas break I was able to watch it on our new TV.
The first episode really made me interested and continue to watch the whole anime. I didn’t get to see the trailer since I am already convinced that it’s a good anime. So, I am right as I go along with the series. My favourite part would be the EROS and AGAPE battle of the two Yuri. For some reason, I’ve come to like Yuri P. because he’s kind of cute and talented yet not that attractive because he looks like a girl. I believe Viktor is a good coach. He has a heart of a teacher wherein he wants to see what else his student can bring out that is not yet known. I think he made it possible for Yuri Katsuki. As everybody would tell, they didn’t see Yuri K. Skate like that as before.
When Yuri K. went back to Japan from a lost battle, he gained weight and his tummy looks like a ball. He needs to get back on his ideal figure skater body when Viktor become all of a sudden to become his coach. It was shown in the anime the every day training routine he ‘s doing like jogging, running up the temple, sideways and so on. I think “YURI ON ICE” anime has shown the reality of being an athlete. The discipline and hard work that an athlete needs to deal with before a competition or even just practices are well presented. Every triumph they will receive in the end of the competition was well savored by this figured skaters. It’s something they really worked hard for.
This anime also offered GLOBAL Characters. What I mean is the characters are not exclusive Japanese people only. Yuri Katsuki joined the China Cup where other Nationalities are also present in the competition. I remember he was closest to the Thai Figure Skater because they used to have the same coach. I was well entertained with his performance. There are more countries in participated like China, USA, South Korea, Swiss, Italy and some more. All are hungry for the number one spot. That makes me more excited about this anime. I even rewind some episodes just to check the score. It’s like I am really watching a figure skating sports and making me learn the point system of the said sports. I think it is cool as ice. * two thumbs up*
The relationship of Viktor and Yuri is the most sensational about this anime setting aside the (sports) figure skating world. Many are very well addicted to our couple-ish VIKTUURI. Initially, Yuri started to be a big fan of Viktor a long time already. Because of the Youtube video he made, Viktor was moved with his performance and all of a sudden becomes his coach with just a snap. It sound crazy but that’s that real fun part in the anime. Imagine if your long time idol will come into your house and live with you. It’s like a dream come true. From fan-idol relationship, it has develop into more intimacy as episodes went by. Viktor is the coach. Yuri is the player. Having the same goal every time they go on competition leads them to become closer and closer. Viktor being clingy by nature and his European roots initiates the fling acts . I confirmed that this has indeed a same sex romance when they got a couple ring. It’s very unusual for two real man to pair rings or even brothers. It’s actually more obvious with Yuri Katsuki that he’s gay and Viktor is just that flamboyant. I can’t even really judge. haha! I don’t really mind them because I love how the story goes. I love Yuri’s Supportive family as well who never forgets to watch on the television to cheers. The triplets are so funny! Haha!
Nevertheless, YURI ON ICE is definitely an anime to watch for. This is my first sports anime review by the way. 🙂 I am planning to watch Kuroko Basketball and I end up watching YURI on ICE instead! I am not even disappointed! It’s also convenient to watch as well because one episode only last for 20 minutes but then I am quite satisfied. WATCH THIS and you won’t regret! ❤
